Henry Pope

ABOUT & CONTACT

Henry Pope has a multi-disciplinary practice which looks at unsettling aesthetics, exploring dystopias and audience participation, working predominantly with sculpture, installation and painting.

His installations and structures are built out of waste materials, mostly sourced from the streets of Bristol. By working with found items, which are usually old, stained and damaged, his work possesses a DIY survival aesthetic with undertones of desperation, depravity and resourcefulness. This “aesthetic of necessity” conjures up images of refugee shelters, impromptu market stalls and temporary quick fixes. Pope describes this aesthetic as both uncomfortable and beautiful; a simplistic visual pleasure derives from a total lack of aesthetic consideration paired with creative and resourceful problem solving.

Confronted with a large and motionless structure, the viewer often feels uncomfortable upon initial viewing of Pope’s work. Through audience participation, Pope explores the transformation of ominous, static structures into an active and approachable platform for discussion. His installations often house interactive elements, most hidden or concealed, demanding a leap of faith from the audience - a closed door with no information. He wants the viewer to be cautiously investigative, exploring minute details and stumbling upon unexpected interactions. Constantly shifting and developing their conceptions about the work.

Pope has been living and working in Bristol since 2017, currently holding a studio with Caraboo Projects.
